Fast food giant Subway is one step closer to opening its doors in Ely.

The major chain has been rumoured to be coming to the city for years and in October bosses applied for planning permission to move into the High Street.

Those plans, which involve changing the signage at the former Lloyds Pharmacy premises, have now been given the green light by East Cambridgeshire District Council.

The proposals involve turning half of the building into a Subway and the other half into a Spar shop.

A spokeswoman for Subway said the firm was unable to confirm when the branch would be opening, or how many jobs would be created.

News that Subway is on its way to Ely has received a mixed reaction from local residents to date.

Some people fear it will have a negative impact on the city’s independent cafes and sandwich bars, while others insist the city needs more and more high street names.
