Six people were caught shoplifting in Ely during a special police crackdown.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary ran the Operation Wicket campaign throughout December in a bid to clamp down on shoplifting in the run up to Christmas.

Shoplifting in the city has always been an issue, particularly during the festive period.

Sgt Will Davis, who is based in Ely, said: “Extra resources were on foot on identified days and times where offences have spiked in the past.

“We worked with the shopkeepers and the local CCTV throughout the month.

“I can confirm that we had a total of six offences, all of which resulted in prosecutions.

“This is a very low figure compared to previous years where we average in the mid twenties.”

Anyone who sees somebody shoplifting should call 101 or 999.
