Vibrant carnival floats, furry ferrets and giant horses ensured families had a day to remember in Soham.

Thousands of people descended on the town’s recreation ground for the annual Soham Carnival and Heavy Horse Show yesterday (Monday).

This year’s event, which was blessed with bright sunshine, kicked off with the heavy horse show in the main arena.

Equine owners from across the country attended to show their prize horses, many of which visitors were able to get up close to.

As ever, the carnival parade, boasting colourful floats, dance routines and lively music, proved popular with residents and visitors alike, with people lining the streets to see it move from Holmes Lane to the main arena.

This year’s carnival royalty were princess Zara Robelo, 7, of Martin Close, who was supported by Faith Bird, 9, and Mia Jones, 9.

Once at the recreation ground, the fun continued through until the early evening, with a whole host of attractions, including falconry displays, ferret racing, magic shows, lurcher racing and classic car parades.

There were also bygones displays, fairground rides, performances from local dance troupes and theatre groups, a beer tent, Punch and Judy shows and stalls, plus the skate park was full of action with BMX, skateboard and scooter competitions.

There was also a special live music stage this year with bands including Resolution Band, Generations, RockVox Choir and Blue Thunder, to name just a few, entertaining the crowds.

As ever, all funds raised from the event, which is now in its 61st year, will be donated to local charities and organisations.
