A street velodrome enabled cycling fanatics to raise their energy levels in Ely.

The velodrome was set up in the city centre on Sunday as part of the bumper Velo Festival - a programme of action-packed cycling events organised by Cambridgeshire County Council to celebrate the Tour de France coming to Cambridgeshire this summer.

Hundreds of people attended the free event in Ely, where they could take up the Brompton challenge and see how quickly they could assemble, race a lap and put down a Brompton.

Visitors were also able to use their pedal power to make their own delicious smoothie and learn more about the history of the bicycle with a display from March Vintage and Veteran Cycle Club.

The veledrome saw cyclists of all abilities speeding around the specially-built track, plus Dr Bike was on hand to give families tips and advice on bike maintenance.

A council spokesman said: “The Vwlo Festival and the events around the Fête du Tour highlight how communities are embracing the Tour de France.

“It is a great privilege to be hosting the start of Stage 3 of the biggest annual sporting event in the world and it is inspiring to see how many people are getting involved in the run up to the race coming to Cambridgeshire.”

The Velo Festival programme will be updated monthly.
