Molly dancing and special chants helped East Cambridgeshire celebrate Plough Monday yesterday.

The annual celebration is the traditional start of the English agricultural year and is generally held on the first Monday after Twelfth Day (January 6).

As ever, the Mepal Molly Men were out in force in the Ely area to mark the occasion.

Dressed as old-fashioned farmers, the group, formed in 1977, performed in Mepal, Sutton, Haddenham, Stretham, Wicken and Soham, before taking to Ely’s Market Place in the afternoon.

Many of the performances were held at primary schools in the villages, where excited youngsters were able to join in.

References to Plough Monday date back to the late 15th century, when it was traditionally the day work resumed after Christmas.
