Britain’s ongoing love affair with apples was celebrated in Ely on Saturday.

The city’s annual Apple Festival was held and, as ever, attracted families from far and wide.

Organised by East Cambridgeshire District Council and Watergull Orchards, people of all ages enjoyed a whole host of apple-themed attractions and activities on Palace Green.

Now in its 13th year, there were apple identification and displays where experts were on hand to categorise the species of fruit.

The longest peel competition, apple and spoon races and apple shy also proved popular, as did the poetry recitals and Morris dancing.

There were also woodturning and cookery demonstrations, a variety of stalls selling apple related wares and plenty of apple related food, juices and ciders.

Tracey Harding, tourism leader at the district council, said: ”It is staggering to think that the Ely Apple Festival is now in its thirteenth year.

“From the original idea of Watergull Orchards to have an apple celebration, our event has now developed into one of the best festivals in the area.

“The day attracts so many people - from those intrigued by what you can cook with an apple to those who have been practising all year to win the longest peel competition.

“With the lovely summer we had – it has certainly been a bumper year for apples.”
