An advent calendar with a twist is being launched in Ely to boost trade and encourage fun in the community this Christmas.

The Lighthouse Centre, in Lynn Road, is spearheading the Giant Advent Calendar scheme as part of its ‘Love Ely’ project.

Throughout December, 24 city centre shops and businesses, including the Ely News, will be taking part in the project by displaying a poster with their designated number inside their premises.

The challenge is for residents to locate as many of the numbers as they can by visiting each premises and then ticking them off on their entry forms.

Zoe Cutter, events coordinator at the Lighthouse Centre, is hoping residents of all ages will take part.

She said: “We’re running the Giant Advent Calendar as part of our Love Ely project.

“We’ve been running lots of different projects; all aimed at promoting and celebrating our beautiful and unique city.

“The aim with this project is to not only boost trade and footfall in the city centre but to also have a bit of fun this Christmas.

“So many of us get stressed out during the festive period and we hope this will just allow people to have a bit of fun.

“People of all ages can take part, including children, so come on - grab and entry form and have some fun while you’re out doing your Christmas shopping.”

Entry forms, which cost £1, will be available from Burrows Bookshop, in High Street Passage, throughout December, or from the Churches Together stall at Ely’s Christmas Lights Switch-on event on Friday, November 29.

All the money raised from the sale of entry forms will be put towards the Christmas lunch which the Lighthouse Centre is putting on on Christmas Day for isolated residents.

Zoe said: “The Christmas lunch is being held on Christmas Day and the aim is to make Christmas a little more special for people who would otherwise spend it just sitting in front of the television alone.”

All the submitted entry forms for the Giant Advent Calendar project will be entered into a prize draw, with the prize being a hamper with gifts donated from each participating business.

It will be drawn in January.

For more information about the project, or about the Christmas dinner, call the Lighthouse Centre on (01353) 662228 or visit the centre in Lynn Road, Ely.
