What do you see when you look at this photograph?

Retired council worker and amateur photographer Des Smith, who snapped it, believes he has captured the ghost of either a cloaked lady or a hooded monk.

Des, 71, who lives in Littleport with his wife, Rita, and whose son, Neil, is a psychic medium, took the photograph earlier this year on farmland in Chettisham, just outside Ely.

Des, of Queens Road, said: “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it.

“I was out walking my dog near to Chettisham Meadows and had my camera on me, as I usually do.

“I love taking photographs of fields and rural scenes so just stopped and clicked away.

“When I got home I put them onto my computer and that’s when I noticed something unusual about this particular photo.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s definitely a ghost.

“Nothing was in the field when I took the photograph.

“I showed the photo to my son and he says it’s definitely a spirit.”

Des, who worked as a groundsman and maintenance worker for East Cambridgeshire District Council for more than 15 years before he retired, said he has had “numerous” ghostly encounters.

He said: “We think it’s the ghost of either a woman wearing a cloak or a hooded monk.

“You only have to read one of the many books on the history of Ely and the surrounding area to realise that spirits of monks are frequently seen.

“I understand people either believe in ghosts or they don’t - and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

“I gave the photograph to the newspaper as I just wanted to see what readers thought I suppose.”

The father-of-three and grandfather-of-seven said: “My son, Neil, is a psychic medium and can communicate with spirits but I don’t like to delve too deep into that.

“All I know is that I have had numerous experiences over the years - hearing voices and seeing strange things - and to me there is definitely another world out there.

“I certainly don’t think it’s a case of that when you die you go away altogether.”
