The sponsor of a new primary school earmarked for the north of Ely is due to be decided next week.

Cambridgeshire County Council’s cabinet is expected to make a decision on what organisation it wants to sponsor the new school when it meets on Tuesday, October 29.

It was agreed in July that the new school will be built on land north of the city’s Princess of Wales Hospital - where thousands of new homes will be built over the coming years.

The plan is to have the facilities up and running by next September to cope with the city’s ever-increasing shortage of school places.

Six organisations have applied to sponsor the school - the Active Learning Trust, the Barnfield Schole Academy Trust, the Elliot Foundation, CfBT, the Diocese of Ely Multi Academy Trust and SchoolsCompany Ltd.

The council’s executive director for children, families and adults is recommending that the Barnfield Schole Academy Trust is chosen.

If cabinet agree, the preference will be sent to the Secretary of State, who will make the final decision.
