SLIDESHOW: Locals gather for Remembrance Day parade through Ely

A silence fell over Ely on Sunday as locals paid their respects on Remembrance Sunday.

Cadets and troops were joined by the Mayor of Ely, Elaine Griffin-Singh, and the City of Ely military band as they marched from St Mary’s Green to Ely Cathedral for a Remembrance Service and two-minute silence.

After the service at the Cathedral, the parade marched to the War Memorial at Market Place to lay wreaths and remember the members of our armed forces.

Stanley Geering, chairman of the Royal British Legion in Ely, said: “The day went extremely well. We were blessed with great weather.

“We have struggled in recent years to get troops to support us after the bases closed down. This year the American Air Force supported us.

“It was a great day with many members of the public coming out to pay their respects.”

Mayor Elaine Griffin-Singh described the service as very “emotional”, especially when the poppies fall from the ceiling of the Cathedral during the two-minute silence.

She said: “There was a good turnout in the Cathedral and it’s always very moving, particularly with the poppy petals falling down from the ceiling and it’s a really part. It was a very emotional day.”

Malcolm Fletcher, secretary for the City of Ely military band, said: “It was a wonderful morning.

“It was a magnificent turnout by the public and we were honoured to have a contingent of American servicemen from Mildenhall with us too.

“The sun was shining and we were able to do our duty for the fallen.”
