SLIDESHOW: Etheldreda Fair raises record-breaking sum for Ely Cathedral Choir Tour Fund

Written byJORDAN DAY

Pimms, cakes and strawberries galore saw a record-breaking amount being raised at this year’s Etheldreda Craft and Food Fair.

Hundreds of families came together in the grounds of Ely Cathedral for the annual event on Saturday.

The fair was started in the early 1990s and was named after St Etheldreda, the founding Abbess of the first Abbey in Ely.

But it is also held to raise money for the Ely Cathedral Choir Tour Fund.

This year’s fair raised more than £4,000 for the fund, which is the highest amount to date.

A spokeswoman for the cathedral said: “Hundreds of people turned out for this traditional family day out which included over 40 tempting stalls of crafts, local foods, jewellery, plants, gifts and summer produce.

“The fair also offered the chance to try your luck on the tombola and test your aim on the coconut shy.

“The Pimms and champagne flowed whilst visitors enjoyed bacon rolls, delicious afternoon teas and strawberries and cream.

“The annual fair also coincides with the Open University degree ceremony day and visitors to the city for the ceremony thoroughly enjoyed the added bonus of the fair.

“This year’s fair raised over £4,000 for the Cathedral Choir and helped finalise the funding for this year’s tour to France in July.

“Tours are solely funded through fundraising by chorister parents.

“The tour fund committee would like to thank all volunteers and local businesses who supported the fair and made it such a huge success.”
