Plans for another solar farm - this time in Little Downham

Written byJORDAN DAY

A renewable energy company wants to build not one but two new solar farms near Ely.

Just a week after Ely News reported that Cheshire-based company, Green Energy UK, wanted to erect solar panels on land north of Lode Way, Haddenham, the firm has now put forward another screening opinion to East Cambridgeshire District Council.

The new screening opinion is for a solar farm to be built on land at the rear of Otterbush Farm in Redcaps Lane, Little Downham.

As is the case with the screening opinion for Lode Way, Haddenham, details about the size of the proposed facilities or how many solar panels they want to erect have not been disclosed.

The screening opinions will see planners telling the developers what supporting evidence they want if and when a formal planning application is submitted, such as environmental/archaeological surveys or the extent of local consultation required.

It comes just weeks after the district council received another screening opinion for a new 81-acre solar farm to be built in Stretham.

Less than 18 months after they secured planning permission to build an 80-acre solar farm on land west of Cross Drove, which is part of their 2,058-acre estate, bosses at F.C Palmer and Sons, based at Stowbridge Farm, in Green End, now want to erect a similar number of solar panels on a parcel of land to the south of the village centre.

A decision on their screening opinion is yet to be made.

Their application also came just weeks after plans to erect 1,000 solar panels at Frog’s Abbey in nearby Coveney were approved.

The final decision on all the screening opinions lies with the council.
