Frustrated parents are calling for a footpath that links a massive housing development to two schools to be completed.

When Barratt Northampton secured planning permission to build the Kings Avenue development in Ely, part of the agreement was that the homes would be linked to the open space beside Ely St Mary’s Junior School and Spring Meadow Infants School, in High Barns, by a footpath.

But years down the line and the pathway has still not been completed - preventing families from using it.

One of those calling for it to be finished is father-of-two Gareth Rowberry, whose son, Dillan, 5, and daughter, Claudia, 3, attend Spring Meadow.

Mr Rowberry, of Turner Drive, off Kings Avenue, said: “Completing this path would prevent all the parents having to walk or cycle along Kings Avenue and then through High Barns with their children.

“The roads to the schools are absolute chaos both at drop-off and pick-up times and are so unsafe.

“The number of near collisions I’ve witnessed is frightening.”

Andrew Swindell, managing director of Barratts Northampton, says the path has not been completed because Ely St Mary’s deemed the connection “unsuitable”.

A spokesman for Ely St Mary’s said a consultation is now underway.

He said: “We are consulting with all interested parties, including Spring Meadow Infants School, to reach the right decision about the path.

“The governing bodies of both schools will be listening to the views of the community and will be considering all potential implications before making that decision.”
