Supermarket giant Asda will open its doors in Soham at the end of this month, it has been confirmed.

The new store, in Clay Street, is set to open on Monday, June 30.

Builders are currently busy refurbishing the former Budgens store, which shut down last month.

In a statement posted on Asda’s website, the manager of the soon-to-open store, Stuart Calver, said: “Your new Asda is a local shop with a large range. We have everything you need for your full weekly shop in store - our Click and Collect service gives you access to the full Asda and George ranges delivered direct into store at a time that’s convenient to you, all at great low prices and served with the unique Asda personality.

“My colleagues and I are focussed on delivering a great shopping experience for all our customers with outstanding prices, great quality and world class service you can trust.

“I will be making sure that we play an active role in the local community, making a real difference to local causes and getting involved in community events.”

A spokesman for Asda confirmed the store’s opening date.

Jonathan James, managing director of the James Graven group, announced he had sold his Budgens store to Asda earlier this year.

All employees have kept their jobs and the new store is creating even more for local people.

Speaking at the time, Mr James said: “I am very grateful to our customers for the support we have been given since we opened in 2003.

“The need for a major supermarket operator in Soham has been talked about for some time locally so the decision to let ASDA operate our town centre store will be the stat of a new era.”

Philip Bartram, senior property communications manager at ASDA, said: “We are delighted to be on the verge of coming to Soham, with the potential to bring the renowned Asda offer to the town’s shoppers while securing and creating local jobs.

“James Graven’s Budgens served the community well for many years but it is our intention to further build on the crucial role the store on Clay Street plays in the local community.”

The news has been largely welcomed by locals, who have been asking for more variety when it comes to shopping in the town for some time.
