Governors of a leading independent school want to build two new homes in one of Ely’s busiest streets.
King’s Ely has submitted plans to build two detached, three-bedroom houses on land at the rear of 35, St Mary’s Street, which is within the city’s conservation area.
The school owns number 35 and used to use the building as boarding facilities for its pupils.
However, the school says it no longer needs the property and that it hopes to convert it in the “very near future”.
In a statement to planners at East Cambridgeshire District Council, the school’s agents, Cheffins, said: “The development site is located at the rear of 35, St Mary’s Street, and currently comprises part of the large rear garden for that property.
“Number 35 is owned by King’s Ely and has been used for boarding pupils.
“King’s no longer need the property and they expect to submit a planning application for the change of use of the property back to a single dwelling (C3 Use) in the very near future.
“It is considered that the erection of two new three-bedroom dwellings in such a sustainable location, close to the city centre, would be desirable, subject to meeting normal planning considerations.
“The site is extremely well located for most services and facilities and is within easy walking distance of the high street, local schools and nurseries.”
The new properties would be accessed via the shared access road that serves the car park behind St Mary’s Surgery.
The agents said: “The space available has been fully utilised with regard to the sensitivities and constraints of the site.
“The positioning of the new houses has been sited to ensure that the impact of the built form complements its surrounding context, particularly with regard to neighbour amenity, orientation, impact on trees, wider distance views and overall visual impact on the conservation area.”
