Two friends have raised more than £8,000 for charity by completing a gruelling three-week expedition.

After more than a year of vigorous training, Keith Gallois, 49, and Tim Titmarsh, 58, successfully climbed more than 17,000ft to the Mount Everest Base Camp.

But it wasn’t a case of getting some rest for the duo once they were there.

Keith, from Witchford, and Tim, from Ely, then climbed up Kala Patthar in Nepal – a whopping 18,200ft - before spending a week in a village in the Kathmandu Valley where they taught in a local school and delivered a large number of football kits donated by the Witchford Colts.

The duo, who met through the community choir, Witchford Voices, which Keith founded, not only successfully completed the expedition but have also raised more than £8,600 for Arthur Rank Hospice and East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice.

Keith said: “It was an amazing, amazing experience and it all feels quite surreal now that we’re home.

“The most difficult part about the expedition wasn’t particularly the physical element of it all as we’d trained so hard, but it was actually the lack of oxygen.

“It makes it so difficult to breathe and there were times when it really made it tough.

“But we did it, and we had a fantastic time.

“Working with the schoolchildren was particularly rewarding. The Nepalese people are so poor yet so happy, and it was amazing to see into their world.”

The duo are now planning their next adventure to raise money for charity and hope to climb Mount Toubkal - the highest peak in North Africa - next summer.
