A Soham teenager is the latest young person to benefit from a new local apprenticeship scheme.

The East Cambridgeshire Apprenticeship Scheme was launched by the district council to bring local businesses and young people together.

The programme has now brought former Soham Village College pupil Aaron Tweed, 16, and Ivor Searle together.

The company, which is based in Soham and is one of the leading independent suppliers of remanufactured engines, gearboxes and turbos, is helping Aaron to understand how engine parts can be remanufactured and reassembled.

Kevin Warren, the firm’s production manager, said: “Aaron has settled in really well and is learning very quickly the skills required to remanufacture engines, gearboxes and turbos to an excellent standard.

“It is great to be part of the East Cambridgeshire Apprenticeship Scheme and we hope to be able to take on other local people in the months and years to come.”

Cllr Tom Kerby, the council’s economic leader, said: “The East Cambridgeshire Apprenticeship Scheme is helping to bring together schools, young people and local business for the benefit of our economy.

“The skills which the apprentices are learning brings the best out of them – not just giving the ability to do their job but also develop the confidence to meet the challenges they will face in the future.”

The scheme helps to support businesses and provide opportunities for young people by topping up the national AGE grant of £1,500 by up to an additional £2,000 if the business takes on a young person from within the district as an apprentice.
