Council apologises for Ely Southern Bypass map blunder

How a new southern bypass in Ely could look. How a new southern bypass in Ely could look.

Cambridgeshire County Council has been left red-faced after an IT glitch meant an online map of Dublin was uploaded instead of one of Ely.

Ely resident Dominic O’Sullivan contacted Ely News today (Thursday) after spotting the error when viewing the controversial Southern Bypass planning application online.

The council says the map, which was of Dublin and belonged to Dublin City Council, has now been rectified.

Mr O’Sullivan said: “It’s heartening to know that the decisions affecting Ely are being made by those with such well-informed local knowledge.”

A council spokesman said: “A new computerised planning information system has recently been introduced which allows the public to view applications online.

“Unfortunately, on this occasion a mistake was made with the location map by our IT provider during testing of the site, for which we can only apologise.”

The £30 million bypass plans are set to be approved by East Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning committee next Wednesday (February 5).
