Celebrations as Ely College scoops Gold

Students and staff at Ely College are starting the New Year on a high after being awarded a Gold Investors in People Award.

The college hosted an independent evaluation team from EMB-X, who carried out an assessment of its performance against the IiP framework in strategic planning, leadership and management, culture and communications, developing people and performance improvement in December.

According to the report, 187 of the 196 requirements were met, which is more than the 165 needed to meet the Gold award.

The assessors said: “This is to be congratulated especially as the college is in the midst of great change and has successfully engaged people who are very committed to supporting ongoing improvements.”

The last assessment was carried out in 2010 when the college achieved a Bronze award.

Ben Gibbs, chair of governors at the college, said: “This is a fantastic start to the new year for the college, and is a richly deserved recognition of the hard work and dedication of all staff.

“This award demonstrates the total commitment of our teachers, support staff and school leaders, both to improving student achievement and creating a learning organisation that best meets the needs of its changing community.”

Inspectors said the school’s culture was one of “openness and trust”.

They added: “The majority of people were very complimentary about their manager’s effectiveness through regular communications, involvement in decisions, appreciation of good work and support for development and ideas.

“People from different backgrounds and experiences are recruited including less conventional promotions to create a diverse community to benefit the students.

“People’s descriptions of what it’s like to work at the college were extremely positive and new starters and role changers felt that their induction covered their needs so that they could contribute early on.”

They added: “Many examples of increased student progress as a result of learning and development and people management and development activities.”
