Arsonists set fire to two hay stacks last night (Thursday) - sparking a police investigation.

Firefighters were called to the blazes in Main Street, Pymoor, at around 11.25pm.

One crew from Ely and one crew from Littleport attended and discovered two separate stacks of hay alight about 200m apart from one another in fields on either side of the road.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “One stack was well alight and looked to have been burning for a number of hours and the other was about 25 per cent alight.

“Fire crews spent two hours monitoring the stack fires and did not engage in any firefighting action. They left the scene at 2.10am.

“At 7.45am this morning (Friday) one crew from Ely returned and remains at the scene to monitor the fires as they burn out.

“The cause of the fires were deliberate.”
