It’s over 30ft tall, will take almost a week to decorate and will need around 200 lights to make it sparkle.

Ely Cathedral’s humongous Christmas tree arrived on Friday and the mammoth task of decorating it got underway today (Monday)

The tree is sourced from the Elveden Estate in Suffolk every year and has been donated by Clare and Peter Shropshire, who visit the estate throughout the year to see how the trees are progressing.

This year’s tree is more than 30ft tall and approximately 30-years-old.

A cathedral spokeswoman said: “The tree is decorated by our volunteers.

“It usually takes around 200 lights and around 2,000 baubles to fully decorate, and that job usually takes our volunteers a whole week to complete.”

The tree will be lit up in time for the cathedral’s Winter Wonderland concert on Saturday (December 7) at 7.30pm.

Tickets range in price from £20 to £10 and are available by calling (01353) 660 349 or visiting www.elycathedral.org.
