An annual Christmas fair held in memory of a popular Ely man has raised yet further vital funds for a hospital.

Patricia Canham has held the Heartbeat event in the city every year since the death of her husband, Eddie, in 1991.

Eddie, who was well-known in the Ely area, died of a heart attack and was treated by nurses at Papworth Hospital.

The fair is held in Eddie’s memory and to raise money for Papworth, and over the years has raised approximately £55,000.

This year’s event was held at the Ely Cathedral Centre, on Palace Green, yesterday (Thursday) and as ever, was attended by hundreds of supporters.

Patricia, of St Mary’s Court, said: “We had a super day.

“People were able to buy a wide variety of Christmas gifts and decorations, as well as jewellery and crafts, all at reasonable prices.

“There were also plenty of festive refreshments, including mince pies, and coffees to keep the visitors refreshed.

“We’ve been running Heartbeat since 1991 and it just seems to grow from strength to strength.

“This year’s event raised £318 but together with the money we raised at the garden fete in the summer, we will be able to hand over £2,500 to Papworth this year.

“That takes the total we’ve raised over the years to around £55,000 which is just astonishing, and I know Eddie would be so proud.

“I’d like to thank each and every person who supports me and the event, as without them it would not be possible.

“My daughter Kelly Canham, sister Yvonne Dockerill, and brother and sister-in-law David and Joan Canham, are particularly supportive and I hope they realise how appreciative I am of their help.”
