Ely’s Etheldreda Parade is being held on Saturday.

The annual event is held to celebrate the founding of Ely by Etheldreda in 673AD.

Etheldreda restored an old church in Ely, reputedly destroyed by Penda, pagan king of the Mercians, and built her monastery on the site of what is now Ely Cathedral.

After its restoration in 970 by Ethelwold it became the second richest abbey in England.

‘Etheldreda’ will arrive by boat at Jubilee Gardens at 11.30am and the parade, which will tell the story of her life in drama and music, will go from the gardens to the cathedral via Cherry Hill.

All are invited to join in on the fun.
