One of Ely’s most popular bars has a new name.

Local hotel owner Fiona Talbot took over what was Deans Bar, in Newnham Street, last September.

The bar, a former bingo hall, had been run by Soham businesswoman Nadine Smith for 29 years.

Fiona and her team ran a competition where customers could enter their suggestion for the new name and the winner was announced at the venue’s New Year’s Eve party, which was attended by around 240 people.

The winner was Becky Law, from Littleport, who chose BAR 62 as the new name – inspired by the fact the drinking hole is located at number 62, Newnham Street.

Becky won the £500 up for grabs in the competition.

Fiona, who has also introduced a food menu and longer opening hours at the venue, said: “We thought it was the right time for a rename and a fresh approach to the bar, and we really hope everyone will support this and understand the spirit in which we are doing it as it had been named after the previous owner.

“We are really excited about developing future plans for BAR 62 and we hope everyone else will be too.”
