A new affordable housing scheme in Ely is nearing completion.

Bosses at Sanctuary Group have marked the progress of the new housing development at The Gardens, in Lynn Road, with a topping out ceremony, celebrating the fact the highest point of the build has now been reached.

Work started on the £2.25 million affordable housing scheme, which is being part-funded by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), last summer.

The 19 new homes are being built by Sanctuary’s contractor Youngs Homes and will include eight one-bedroom apartments and five two-bedroom houses for affordable rent, as well as six family houses for shared ownership.

Representatives from East Cambridgeshire District Council and the HCA joined Sanctuary Group and Young Homes at the ceremony, with the Mayor of Ely, Cllr Lis Every, invited to pour a bottle of locally-brewed beer over the roof top to toast the highest point of the build having been reached.

Mark Osborne, Sanctuary’s project manager, said: “Thanks to the hard work of our contractors, this scheme is progressing well and is due to be completed on schedule in the summer.

“It’s traditional in the construction industry to mark reaching the highest point of the build – here, the roof of a one-bedroom apartment at the Lynn Road site.

“We feel this is a project worth celebrating as it will provide a mix of high-quality homes for affordable rent and shared ownership as well as additional benefits in the local area in terms of employment and training opportunities and community projects.”

The beer for the topping out ceremony was provided by the Liberty Belle Mikcropub located in Ely’s Forehill.
