The Ely and District branch of Cats Protection is at bursting point and with the countdown to Christmas now officially on, Ely News wants to help.

We’re launching an Ely Catvent Calendar in a bid to get as many felines in a warm, cosy home this festive season.

The scheme will see us featuring a different cat which is in search of a home on our website everyday throughout December - all of which are currently being cared for at the charity’s base in Little Downham.

Linda Hutchinson, who runs the branch, said: “We are totally full at the moment and have several cats on the waiting list to come in.

“Apart from the usual strays, the main reasons that cats are coming in are relationship breakdowns, elderly people going into residential care and people having to move into private rented property where they cannot take their pets.

“It is this last category that is seeing a big increase at the moment and is a reflection of the current economic climate.

“We desperately need to find homes for as many cats as we can so that we can help the ones on our waiting list. There is always a cat in need.”

Today’s cats are Smirnoff and Kovu - an adorable mother and son.

Smirnoff, a 4-year-old grey and white female cat, and Kovu, her 3-year-old black son, are the shelter’s longest stay cats.

Linda said: “These are our longest stay cats and although we have had offers of homes for them individually, they must stay together as they are very dependent on each other.

“Smirnoff can be a bit shy at first but is lovely when she gets to know you while Kovu is more outgoing.

“We’re desperate to find them a home where they can live out the rest of their lives together.”
