The Ely and District branch of Cats Protection is at bursting point and with the countdown to Christmas now officially on, Ely News wants to help.

We’re launching an Ely Catvent Calendar in a bid to get as many felines in a warm, cosy home this festive season.

The scheme will see us featuring a different cat which is in search of a home on our website everyday throughout December - all of which are currently being cared for at the charity’s base in Little Downham.

Linda Hutchinson, who runs the branch, said: “We are totally full at the moment and have several cats on the waiting list to come in.

“Apart from the usual strays, the main reasons that cats are coming in are relationship breakdowns, elderly people going into residential care and people having to move into private rented property where they cannot take their pets.

“It is this last category that is seeing a big increase at the moment and is a reflection of the current economic climate.

“We desperately need to find homes for as many cats as we can so that we can help the ones on our waiting list. There is always a cat in need.”

Today’s cat is Princess.

Princess is a 4-year-old female, black cat.

She was taken to Cats Protection because she was too stressed with the young children living in the household she was in.

Princess is looking for a quiet home with no dogs or other cats where she can have a warm place to sleep and a garden to roam around in the summer.

If you are interested in Princess or re-homing a cat, call (01353) 699430.
